Sudanese daily on so-called 'SADR' entity
Sudan-Morocco, Politics, 6/28/2005

The self-proclaimed 'Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic' (SADR) does not have any of the internationally recognised components of a sovereign state, said on Monday Sudanese daily "Arrai al Aam."

Headlined "Together to Support Moroccan Territorial Integrity," the article denounces Kenya's decision to recognise the phantom entity of "SADR," deploring that this recognition "comes at a time when efforts are deployed to find a final solution to (the Moroccan Sahara) issue."

Kenya has lately recognised the SADR, an entity proclaimed, in 1976, by the Algeria-backed 'Polisario', which claim ever since the separation of Morocco's southern provinces (known as the Sahara) from the rest of the country. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under Madrid Accords signed with Spain and Mauritania.

"While many people in Arab governments are dedicated to concretise the Arab nation unity, foreign forces endeavour to divide Arab countries and create micro-entities," said the author of the article, Bakhit Kamal Hassan, saying he was sure that some armed forces were formed by the coloniser to attack Morocco.

He highlighted the importance of the kingdom's territorial integrity, pointing out that harming this integrity means harming the whole Arab nation especially that the world lives in an era of union not division.

Hassan recalled that "over 400 Moroccans are still detained in the 'Polisario' prisons, and are considered as the longest-serving prisoners in the world since some of them are detained for over thirty years."

He reaffirmed support to "Morocco's territorial integrity as well as the unity of the whole Arab nation," which is "a common conviction among our peoples that are attached to the Arab nation unity and hence Morocco's unity, whose king and people deserve our respect and esteem," he said.

The number of countries recognizing the Polisario Front's self-proclaimed SADR is seriously dropping. The number of countries bound by diplomatic relations with SADR has fallen from 76 in 1995 to 49 at present and the number of African countries recognising Polisario's self-proclaimed republic has dropped from 34 to 22.

Outside Africa, no developed country has relations with the self-proclaimed SADR, and only one European country (Albania) still has ties with it.
