Fire opened at an Israeli military unit in the Golan
Syria-Israel, Politics, 6/28/2005
Israeli military sources said that one Israeli military unit was exposed to fire in the occupied Syrian Golan heights, but no casualties were reported.
A spokeswoman for the Israeli occupation army said that light bullets were fired at the Israeli soldiers to the south of Quneitra, noting that the Israeli force did not retaliate "in order to maintain self-control." The spokeswoman indicated that Israel complained at the UN but gave no details over the incident.
On April 15 this year, one armed man infiltrated from a fence between the Syrian and Israeli sides in the Golan Heights and opened fire at one Israeli military position before he was detained by the Israeli forces. Israeli military sources explained later that the man was a young Palestinian, who was planning to kidnap an Israeli army officer.
Damascus has denied Israeli accusations that gun fire was opened from Syria at Israeli soldiers in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. An official Syrian media source that asked to be anonymous said that what had happened was the lighting of firework by teenagers on the occasion of Syria's restoration of the occupied city of Quneitra, noting that a procession of UNDOF is verifying this matter.
However, Israeli sources said that one Israeli military unit was attacked in the occupied Syrian heights, but no casualties were reported.
Israel withdrew from Quneitra in 1974 according to a disengagement agreement with Israel and kept other parts of the Golan under its occupation.
Worthy mentioning that negotiations between the Syrian and Israeli governments over the fate of the Syrian Golan heights which was occupied by Israel in 1967 collapsed in 2000.
A UN Disengagement Observer Force UNDOF is deployed along the cease fire line between Israel and Syria in the Golan.
