World Tribunal On Iraq calls for investigation of those responsible for crimes against humanity
Iraq-USA, Politics, 6/28/2005

The World Tribunal On Iraq on Monday condemned each of the US, Britain and the coalition forces over the incidents taking place in Iraq.

The Tribunal, which finished its three-day deliberations in Turkey yesterday, recommended after three days of sessions of hearing to carry out comprehensive investigations on sides responsible for "crimes of aggression and crimes against mankind in Iraq," starting as from the American President George W. Bush, the British prime minister Tony Blair and all government officials of the military coalition. Here are some of tribunal's recommendations:

-"That there be an exhaustive investigation of those responsible for crimes of aggression and crimes against humanity in Iraq, beginning with George W. Bush, President of the United States of America; Tony Blair, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; and other government officials from the coalition of the willing;"

-"That we initiate a process of accountability to hold those morally and personally responsible for their participation in this illegal war, such as journalists who deliberately lied, corporate media outlets that promoted racial, ethnic and religious hatred, and CEOs of multinational corporations that profited from this war;"

- "That people throughout the world launch actions against US and UK corporations that directly profit from this war. Examples of such corporations include Halliburton, Bechtel, Carlyle, CACI Inc., Titan Corporation, Kellog, Brown and Root (subsidiary of Halliburton), DynCorp, Boeing, ExxonMobil, Texaco, British Petroleum. The following companies have sued Iraq and received 'reparation awards': Toys R Us, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Shell, Nestle, Pepsi, Phillip Morris, Sheraton, Mobil. Such actions may take the form of direct actions such as shutting down their offices, consumer boycotts, and pressure on shareholders to divest."

- "That soldiers exercise conscience and refuse to enlist and participate in an illegal war. Also that countries provide conscientious objectors political asylum."

- "That the international campaign for dismantling all US military bases abroad be reinforced."

- "That people around the world resist and reject any effort by any of their governments to provide material, logistical, or moral support to the occupation of Iraq."

The chairperson of the trustee commission at the court, Arundhati Roy, of Indian nationality, said "our aim is to get the withdrawal of the American and British forces." The tribunal includes some 200 non governmental organizations. It was established similar to Racal court which by the end of the 1960s condemned the American war against Vietnam.

The tribunal, founded in 2003 as a symbolic organization, concluded "We, the Jury of Conscience, hope that the specificity of these recommendations will lay the groundwork required for a world where the international institutions will be shaped and reshaped by the will of people and not fear and self-interest, where journalists and intellectuals will not remain mute, where the will of the people of the world will be central, and human security will prevail over state security and corporate profits."

The decision of the Tribunal, which held hearing for 2 years around the world and has no legal enforcement powers, came one day before an important speech President Bush will deliver in a military base in the Carolinas in which he will seek to convince the American public that winning the war in Iraq is still possible, at a time when pressure have increased on him to disclose to the Americans the reality of what the US forces are facing there.
