Al-Assad, Mubarak discuss conditions in the region, Lebanon
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 6/27/2005
In a telephone call, the Syrian President basher al-Assad discussed with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak on Sunday conditions in the Arab region and developments on the Syrian and Lebanese arenas and bilateral elations between the two states.
Meantime, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Abi al-Gheit considered that the implementation of what was left of UN resolution 1559 is a matter for the Lebanese people, the authority and the Lebanese parliament to decide on.
In a joint press conference with his Indonesian peer, Hassan Wera Youda, in Cairo replying a question on the American and French pressure on Syria, Abu al-Gheit said "the situation in Lebanon is crystallizing." He added that "elections took place ( in Lebanon). Election will be made for the speaker of a Parliament and the formation of a new government and therefore the final status will be settled ultimately. Thereby we would have reached the point of detente in the situation. All that will remain is the issue of the militias, as stated by the French and American sides," noting that "the Lebanese people, authority and parliament have to decide on this matter."
On what has been rumored on arrangements for Mubarak's visit to Israel, Abu al-Gheit said "it is early talking about his matter. When conditions permit, then there will be a consideration for this matter."
