Sudan: al-Bashir received the draft of the interim constitution
Sudan, Politics, 6/27/2005

The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on Sunday received the draft of the interim constitution from the chairman of the joint constitution commission for the government Abdullah Idris, in the presence of the joint commission chairman for the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), Abeel Aleir, and several commission's members and the chairman of the opposition national coalition delegation Ali Mahmou Hasanin.

Bashir said that the draft of the constitution "is a message sent by the people of Sudan to the world to confirm they are tolerant people able to eliminate all its bitterness, differences, and wounds and that the consensus achieved among the Sudanese parties on the draft of the constitution has not happened in Sudan's history since independence."

Bashir said in the celebration for handing him the draft "we hoped that all Sudanese forces and parties to be represented in the commission," noting that "Sudan has started a new phase of peace and stability." He indicated that the people's movement and the government overcame the fight for building confidence among themselves since the beginning of the forming the permanent constitution, adding that the fight to building confidence for the culture of peace was also overcome since the signing of Nivasha agreement for comprehensive peace.

On behalf of the commission, Idris made a statement in which he commended the completion of the draft within the spirit of cooperation among members of the commission with their various parties and political forces, including 22 parties and 7 civil organizations, noting that the commission held 60 meetings.
