Berri to be elected as speaker of the Lebanese parliament
Lebanon, Politics, 6/27/2005

Te Lebanese parliament tomorrow Tuesday will elect Nabih Berri as its speaker for the fourth term of office, at a majority of more than 100 votes, after large blocs at the parliament announced support for his nomination.

The main supporter for this nomination was "al-Mutaqbal" bloc which met for the first time after the elections on Sunday in Qreitem under the chairmanship of Saad al-Hariri.

On the opposite side, Christian parliamentarians announced their intention to vote against the re-election of Berri by submitting blank papers for their vote. This position is also adopted by Michael Aoun, the Lebanese forces, and the parliamentarians of Qernet Shehwan group.

For his part, Aoun said he is ready to take part in a national government "but within a program because we do not want to have differences inside the Cabinet which is 'not for the supporters nor for the opposition' rather for implementing a specific policy." He explained he will take part in "Baabda consultations to nominate a new prime minister.
