Qatar settles two thirds of nationality withdrawal issues; to continue the process
Qatar, Politics, 6/27/2005
Qatar announced that it had settled one third of the status of persons whose nationalities were withdrawn from them, wether by giving them the Qatari nationality or allowing them to keep their original nationality.
Chairman of the Qatar's committee for human rights, Khaled al-Ateyah, said that the "committee follows up with the authorities concerned on the conditions of the remaining members whose conditions have not been settled yet, in the course of human rights principles and laws enforced in the country."
Earlier this month, the committee estimated the number of families bread-winners whose nationalities were withdrawn at 700, with their number to become 5,000 when children and wives are included. The authorities attributed the reason to that the Qatari laws ban dual nationality.
The Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem al-Thani stressed that his country has not signed the Gulf states security agreement for years except after including the law on preventing dual nationality. A law which was adopted by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states for fears of the dissemination of terrorism phenomenon.
