El Guerrouj honorary citizen of Athens

International and Olympic champion Hicham El Guerrouj was conferred the title of honorary citizen of the city of Athens.
Greece ambassador to Morocco, Michel Cambanis, handed El Guerrouj a title declaring him honorary citizen of Athens, announced Greece's embassy in Rabat.
This move is a "testimony of the glory El Guerrouj brought to the Olympic spirit and to the sports spirit in general," said the same source.
The Moroccan athlete made a historic achievement last summer during the Olympic games of Athens as he won two gold medals in 1500m and 5000m. El Guerrouj won his first international title in the same city in 1997.
