Gibraltar Moroccans rise for 'Moroccanity' of Sahara
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 6/24/2005
Nearly a third of the fifteen hundred Moroccans living in Gibraltar staged, Thursday, a demonstration to reaffirm the 'Moroccanity' of the Sahara, Morocco's southern provinces.
The manifestation that was called for by the Moroccan Workers Association in Gibraltar also denounced the dramatic humanitarian situation of the Moroccans sequestered in the Polisario-controlled Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria).
Bryan Zammit, chairman of the UN Association in Gibraltar (UNA-Gibraltar), who took part in the demonstration, condemned the sequestration of Moroccans by the Polisario "as prisoners for over a quarter of a century in flagrant violation of the international humanitarian right, and the resolutions of the Security Council."
Zammit recalled the oft-repeated calls by the UN Secretary General and the humanitarian organizations to the leaders of the "Polisario" to release the sequestered Moroccans, calling, in the name of the UNA-Gibraltar, for the "immediate and unconditional release" of the Moroccan detainees.
At the end of the manifestation, participants read out a communiquŽ in which they urged the international community to exert pressure on the "Polisario" to free the Moroccan prisoners and lift the siege off the thousands of Moroccans in Lahmada region, (south-western Algeria).
