Syria to reopen embassy in Baghdad
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 6/24/2005

Syria announced Thursday decision to send a delegation to Iraq as to re-open her embassy in Baghdad as soon as possible.

"We will be contacting officials in Baghdad very soon to know the source and truth of all allegations against Syria and to get the Iraqi side to supply us with the documents and evidence for us to examine," Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara said in a joint press conference yesterday.

The minister stressed that "Syria has been so open to have brotherly relations with the Iraqis and ready to refute every accusation against her by evidence and facts." The foreign minister stressed that Syria will not allow any accusation against her every now and then, particularly when the sides that has thrown accusations against Syria is the same side who has prevented Syria from owning the required equipments to fix control of her borders with Iraq, noting that "every border is exposed to infiltration including the US borders."

Al-Shara assured the necessity of supporting the Iraqi caretaker government's efforts to realize security, continue the political process, form a constitution, perform the Iraqi forthcoming election and realize a time table for withdrawal of all foreign forces from Iraq according to UN 1546 resolution.

He noted that this is what meets the demands of the Iraqi people.

Syria and China voiced optimism over the outcome of yesterday's conference on Iraq in Brussels saying they were constructive.

Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara underlined that the conference's results are "positive in general" because they were based on many principles headed by asserting Iraq's integrity as land and people and supporting his sovereignty and total independence.

Chinese Foreign Minister at the conference said, for his part, that the conference contributed in stirring up the spirit of multiplicity over the world as well as equality among all countries in accordance with the UN convention, adding "it is necessary to respect the Iraqis' will as well as listen to their neighboring countries."

Zhaoxing expressed his country's support to Syria's "fair stances" particularly those related to the Iraqi issue.

"China has renewed support to Syrian and Arab just issues," the Chinese minister said, pointing out at the joint cooperation and consultation between Syria and China regarding the region's issues which came out in Brussels Conference on Iraq.

"Both sides have stressed that no one has the right to determine Iraq's destiny but the Iraqis," Zhaoxing, asserted pointing out at the importance of activating the UN's role to deal with the Iraqi issue.
