Morocco celebrates World Music Day
Morocco, Local, 6/23/2005

Morocco celebrated on Tuesday the World Music Day through staging mega concerts in Rabat and Casablanca.

Chellah, a ravishing Roman site and Merinide necropolis in Rabat, gave a touch of magic to the Andalusia music mega concert given, for the same time in the history of Morocco, by an orchestra of over 120 musicians and chorus singers from various regions of Morocco (TŽtouan, Chefchaouen, Rabat, Sale, Fes and Meknes).

Maestro Mohamed Briouel conducted the symphony that featured a rich repertoire of Moroccan Andalusia music wonderfully performed by chorus singers notably the emotion-filled voice of Abderrahim Souiri.

Music lovers, who teemed the square to sample the divine tunes of the Andalusia repertoire, went through a journey through history when cultures interacted in the western Mediterranean region of southern Spain and North Africa to give birth to this musical style.

For nearly seven centuries at the Muslim courts of Cordoba, Sevilla and Granada in southern Spain, the arts of poetry, music and architecture flourished. The music known as al 'Ala l-Andalusia' was born in this environment and can be traced to the early 9th century A.D. with the arrival of the Persian musician Ziryab at the court of Abd er-Rahman II in Cordoba. At his courts and those of subsequent Sultans throughout Andalou music played an increasingly important role.

"Moussiqua al-‰la" "at-Tarab al-Andaloussi," or "al-Moussiqua al-Andaloussia." Different names but the rhythms and the pleasure to listen are all the same.

In Casablanca, well-know musical bands such as "Nasss El Ghiwane," "Jil Jilala," "Mesnaoua," "Lamchaheb," "Tagada," "Assiham," "Ben Aguida," "Banat al Ghiwane," "les Senhaji" and "les Bourgone," besides other sixty musical bands form various regions of the kingdom staged free concerts in dozen stages.

On this occasion, musicians also visited three orphanages and gave concerts in favour of 2,000 children.
