French position on Sahara issue 'constant', spokesman
Morocco-France, Politics, 6/23/2005
The French foreign Ministry reaffirmed on Thursday the "constant position" of France regarding the Sahara issue, stating anew that the European country is for "a political, negotiated solution acceptable to all parties, within the framework of the United Nations."
The Sahara dispute opposes Morocco to the Algeria-backed Polisario Front that claims the separation of Morocco's southern provinces, known as the Sahara. The Spanish former colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under Madrid accords.
Spokesman of the French foreign ministry, Jean-Baptiste Mattˇi, stressed the constancy of the French stance on this issue, but declined commenting on the statement made Wednesday by Spanish foreign minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos who hinted that "France was changing stance."
"Moratinos is foreign minister of Spain and speaks as such," he pointed out.
