Booby trapped car explosions kill 22 in Baghdad

Some 22 persons were killed and more 50 were injured in four booby trapped cars explosions in the west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

The explosions targeted a barbecue restaurant which is inhabited by a Shiite majority, a stop station for buses, and a vehicle for the Iraqi army.

The Iraqi police said that three booby trapped car were blown up simultaneously in positions separated almost by one kilometer distance, and this resulted in killing 18 Iraqis and injuring at least 46.

In al-Amereyah quarters in the west of Baghdad, one booby trapped car explosion targeted a vehicle for the Iraqi police, but resulted in killing four passersby, according to one Iraqi army officer. The officer said that among the killed persons were one woman and one child and that no member of the vehicle was injured.

Earlier in the day on Wednesday, three Iraqis were killed and other seven injured in a booby trapped car attack targeted their vehicle in a quarter to the west of al-Musil to the north of Iraq. It was not clear whether casualties were inflected upon the Americans as one of their armored vehicle was greatly damaged.

Two Iraqi policemen were killed and other two injured in a bomb explosion that targeted their procession in al-Madaen area to the south of Baghdad. Four persons were injured, three of them are in critical health condition, in an attempt to assassinate the chairman of the Turkman front in Karkouk, Saad Eddine Arkaj.

On the other hand, gunmen killed the Sunni judge Jasem al-Isawi and his son while they were in their car. Isawi was a teacher at the faculty of law a Baghdad University. He was invited to joint the new Iraqi constitution formulation committee but refused later after he got threats from gunmen.

On the other hand, the American army announced the killing of three of its soldiers during armed clashes that took place to the west of Iraq. The three American soldiers were killed on Tuesday by the bullets of gunmen near al-Ramadi city.

In another development, the President of the Philippines announced the release of her country's hostage who had been held in Iraq since November, 2004.
