Bashir: National unity government to be formed before July 9
Sudan-Egypt, Politics, 6/20/2005

President Bashir announced that a Sudanese national unity government would be formed on July 9. In his address marking the signing of the Cairo accord on national reconciliation in Sudan, he spoke of President Hosni Mubarak's earnest efforts to reach this agreement and his interest in Sudan's territorial integrity.

A united Sudan represents strength to Egypt, he said, referring to the two countries sharing of a common past, present and future.

Efforts will continue to bring peace to all parts of Sudan, he added.

He said the unified Sudan is added strength to Egypt considering this year as the year or peace, unity and stability in Sudan.

He said it is time for compensating Sudan's citizens for their sufferings during the time of different conflicts, renewing commitment to the peace initiative and strategy.

Meantime, President Hosni Mubarak and his Sudanese counterpart Bashir on Saturday witnessed the signing ceremony of Cairo accord between the Sudanese government and Sudan's National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Leader of the Sudanese Democratic National Alliance Mohamed Othman Al Merghani and First Sudanese Vice President Ali Othman Taha signed the Cairo accord at the International Conference Center in Nasr City.

Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) Leader John Garang was present. Also present were Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, Al Azhar Grand Imam Dr. Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, Shura Council Speaker Safwat El Sherif, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, Minister of Information Anas El Feki and other state officials.

After the signing of the Cairo Charter for national reconciliation in Sudan, Mirghani, addressing the ceremony, expressed thanks to Egypt for its efforts to reach peace and reconciliation in Sudan and for hosting the negotiations that led to the signing of this accord.

Applying this agreement on the ground requires all parties to shoulder the national responsibility to realize the tasks of the coming phase, Merghani said, promising that the NDA would deal seriously with the National Congress and the SPLM to realize the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

The strategic aim is to work on reaching a comprehensive political solution to the Sudanese problem, he added. Garang, on his part, praised Egypt's efforts to reach this landmark agreement. Garang said Egypt and the Sudan are one country and one people, stressing the importance of sustaining dialogue so as to have a unified Sudanese state. Egypt has always been there to work on Sudan's territorial integrity and to stress the importance of its democratic transformation, he added.
