Japanese grant for Syria for water projects

Syria and Japan on Sunday signed mutual letters by which Japan offers Syria an 390-million-Yen economic grant ( USD 3.64 mln) to fund the project of rehabilitation of tunnels of water drawing to Damascus city.
The grant comes as part of technical and scientific cooperation agreement between the two sides and embodiment of their friendship.
The grant aims at rehabilitation of the two water tunnels from al-Fijeh Fountain to Damascus city as well as offering verification systems, maintenance equipment and training.
The letters were signed from the Syrian side by Deputy Prime Minister and head of the State Planning Commission Abdullah al-Dardari and from the Japanese side by the Japanese Ambassador in Damascus Azusa Hayashi in the presence of Minister of Housing and Construction Mohammad Nihad Mshantat.
The Minister and Hayashi exchanged friendly speeches in which they expressed content over the grant and the Japanese financial assistance to carry out this vital project.
The project is due to start this month and is expected to finish by the end of next year. It will reduce waste water in the old water distribution system to 5 percent from 27 percent.
