Saudi Arabia confirms discussing border disputes with UAE

The Saudi minister of the interior Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz said he had discussed in Abu Dhabi the issue of the border between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, denying the existence of any differences between the two states.

The Saudi official news agency quoted prince Nayef after returning back from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh that the visit was successful by all means.

He explained that the meeting he had with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Khaleifa Bin Zayed al-Nahyan, and with sides concerned with the border issue, were fruitful, noting that he had discussed with the UAE sides aspects of relations between the two states.

Replying to a question over final border agreement between the two states, Prince Nayef said that "the agreement was made in the past," adding "there is an agreement signed since 1974, only certain uncompleted things are left." A Gulf source said that Saudi and UAE officials held taks in Abu Dhabi that dealt with an older border disputes and sharing oil fields along the joint borders between the two sides.

Another Gulf source in Riyadh, asked to remain anonymous, said that the talks "pertain to issues on the borders and fixing them, and means of maintaining an agreement on investing oil fields situated in the joint borders." Worthy mentioning that the file of the Saudi borders with the UAE was handed over to Prince Nayef while with UAE side is being handled by the deputy premier for services Hamdan Bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
