Syria's joining trade marks accord helps investments

Minister of Economy said on Wednesday Syria's joining to Madrid protocol for Trade Marks has contributed to attracting foreign trade marks and encouraging investment in Syria.

"Protecting the Syrian product abroad by registering the national product internationally will help to define the Syrian product and facilitate procedures to ease his entering into the international market," Amer Hosni Lutfi said at opening of a seminar on international registration for trade marks.

He noted that directorate of protecting the intellectual property has received more than 300 international requests during the short period of Syria's joining Madrid protocol and accord.

Representative of the World Intellectual Property Organization WIPO Mubarak Rahmetallah pointed out to importance of Syria's joining Madrid protocol while there is an extension in the member countries that reached to 77 countries.

He called Syria to consider joining the Hague accord regarding international registration of industrial drawings and patterns.

The two-day seminar discussed international registration of trade marks according to Madrid protocol and mechanism of international registration of trade marks after Syria's joining the Madrid protocol in September 2004.

The aim of the seminar is to boost and consolidate the intellectual property role as well to develop services allowed for companies and projects development to match international developments in this respect.
