Morocco, Italy to materialize telecommunication MoU provisions
Morocco-Italy, Economics, 6/15/2005
The implementation of the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Morocco and Italy in 2003 on telecom was addressed, Tuesday, in a meeting between the Minister of Economic and General Affairs, Rachid Talbi Alami, and visiting Italy's Communication Minister Mario Landolfi.
The accord provides, inter alia, for the setting up of training centers for Moroccans to meet the needs of the telecommunication field, which would ultimately offer some 250,000 jobs, by 2010, for Moroccan technicians and engineers.
The MoU was signed to partially ward off Europe's imminent deficit, in 2025, in human resources in this field, estimated at 2.5 million technicians and engineers.
Minister Alami voiced Morocco's intention to call for the expertise of Italy to secure the IT system in Morocco and combat cyber-crime and the misuse of the Internet.
He recalled the projects that Morocco has launched, namely in telepayment, biometric ID card, and the Euro 100,000 project of fitting out 8600 schools with multimedia rooms, due to start in September 2005.
Italy is Morocco's third commercial partner after France and Spain. In 2004, Italian exports to Morocco totalled about Euro 945m. As Morocco's exports to the European country, they stood at some Euro 467m.
