UAE- Saudi talks to discuss border differences issue
United Arab Emirates-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 6/15/2005
United Arab Emirates and Saudi officials on Tuesday held talks in Abu Dhabi over the border disputes between the two sides and the sharing of oil revenues on their joint borders.
A Gulf source asked to be anonymous said that the talks which were held between the President of the United Arab Emirates UAE Sheikh Khaleifa Bin Zayed al-Nahyan and the Saudi minister of the interior Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz concentrated on the border disputes.
The source added that Prince Nayef received the border file from the Saudi sides, while it was assumed by the UAE deputy premier and minister of state for foreign affairs Sheikh Hamadan Bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
The Saudi news agency had stated names of certain members of the Saudi delegation. It was noted among them officials assigned to search for border issues.
The Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal approved in March that there are differences between the two states on their water borders.
Worthy mentioning that the two states signed the "Jeddah agreement" in August 1974 stating that Riyadh gives up demanding ownership of al-Breimi oases while on the other side Abu Dhabi leaves Khour al-Aided which constitutes a coastal area between Abu Dhabi and Qatar. There are 80% of al-Sheiba oil wells to the south of Saudi Arabia, known in the UAE side as Zrara.
Al-Sheiba oil wells include confirmed oil reserves estimated at 15 billion barrels. It also includes 650 million cubic meters of so far not invested natural gas.
