Syria urges EU to aid removing blocks in relations
Syria-European Union, Politics, 6/15/2005

Syria on Tuesday underlined the EU's important role in removing obstacles blocking the Syrian-European relations.

In a meeting with a European Parliamentary Delegation headed by Beatrice Patrie, President Bashar al-Assad asserted the importance of a constructive dialogue to form a clear vision of the situation and to specify priorities of the development process in Syria.

President al-Assad also talked about prospects of the political, social and party life in Syria.

He pointed out to the latest developments in the region as well as Syria's efforts in fighting terrorism and extremism, saying "achieving peace in the region will contribute to pushing the economic development process forward."

In a meeting with Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, the European delegation said "Signing the Syrian-European partnership will open wide prospects for cooperation in the interest of both sides." Both sides also discussed the latest developments on the regional and international arenas as well as the peace process in the region and the EU's role in the region's questions.

During a meeting with Speaker of the People's Assembly Mahmoud al-Abrash, Patri underlined that the European Parliament and Union support Syria. "We noticed a serious and strong desire for reform during our meeting with President Assad... We seek to hold honest dialogue particularly following the Baath 10th Regional Congress," she said. She also expressed hope over achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.

Both sides shed light on the underway economic and political reforms and developments in Syria. "Syria, under the leadership of President al-Assad seeks reform and modernization," al-Abrash said, hoping that this visit will give a clear and transparent image of Syria as a peace-loving country that works hard to achieve peace in the region.
