Islamist party says Islamist activist anti-monarchy statements are 'unacceptable'
Morocco, Politics, 6/14/2005

The moderate Islamist Party of Justice and Development (PJD) has denounced as "unacceptable" the statements of the Islamist activist Nadia Yassine who stated recently that "monarchy is not suitable for Morocco."

Nadia Yassine, daughter of the leader of the non-recognized movement of Al Adl Wal Ihssane, vented, in a interview with the Moroccan weekly 'Al Ousbouia Al Jadida', her preference for the republican regime, adding that the monarchy does not suit Morocco.

"Any defamation or denigration of the monarchy regime - that Moroccans have chosen a thousands years ago - is an unacceptable and irresponsible overstatement," noted the general secretariat of PJD (represented in parliament) in a release published Monday by "Attajdid" daily.

Following her statements, Yassine was summoned on June 3 by the judiciary police at the request of the Prosecutor of the Rabat first instance court. She and the director of 'Al Ousbouia Al Jadida' will appear before court on June 28 in relation to these statements.

On its part, The Movement of Unity and Reform (MUR) also denounced press statements that "damage the sacred values of the nation," noting that constitutional monarchy is a symbol that contributes to stability in the country.
