Aoun aspires to expand his victories to the north
Lebanon, Politics, 6/14/2005

After winning the elections in the Aley-Keserwan circle, former leader of the Lebanese army Michael Aoun visited the Lebanese parliamentarian Suleiman Franjieh who leads in one circle in north Lebanon the rival list for Saad al-Hariri, son of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.

This visit is part of Aoun's attempt to stretch his influence to this region where the fourth and last phase of the elections will be carried out next Sunday.

Aoun, who nominated four of his supporters in the north, confirmed in a joint press conference with Franjieh at his summer headquarters in Ihden that "the possibilities for success are great."

Worthy mentioning that the governorate of north Lebanon includes two circles represented in 28 seats of which 15 are for Christians. Aoun is taking part in these elections with three candidates in the Franjieh list in the second circle ( 17 seats) and of a fourth candidate in the first circle ( 11 seats ).

Aoun, accompanied by Franjieh also visited the former Lebanese prime minister Omar Karami who is boycotting the elections as a voter and as a candidate, alike. From there, he called on the citizens of Tripoli to resist what he called the temptation of the material bribes," which Aoun accuses al-Hariri trend of.
