Islamist activist statements 'oppose deep beliefs of Moroccan nation,' official
Morocco, Politics, 6/11/2005
The Moroccan government Spokesman, Nabil Benandellah, affirmed Thursday the statements of the Islamist activist Nadia Yassine, who said "monarchy is not suitable for Morocco," oppose the "deep beliefs of the Moroccan nation."
"It is natural to have recourse to justice when the provisions of the Constitution are violated," he added.
Nadia Yassine, a top member of the non-recognized Islamist group Al Adl Wal Ihssan (Justice and Charity) and daughter of the spiritual leader of the group Abdeslam Yassine, was interrogated by police after her statements were published in the al-Ousbouaaya al-Jadida weekly. Editor of the paper, Abdelaziz Gougass, was also questioned by the police. They will both go on trial on June 28.
Commenting on this question, Benabdellah said in a press briefing "the press code is clear and defines responsibilities of persons who make statements, those who publish them, those who print them and those who distribute them."
