Junblat: all Lebanese opposition are targeted
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 6/11/2005

The question of the Syrian presence in Lebanon came to the forefront with the beginning of the Lebanese parliamentary elections.

Such a presence was highlighted with the assassination of the Lebanese journalist Samir Qassir one week before. The opposition Druze leader Walid Junblat expected Qassir's assassination not to be the last.

In a televised interview yesterday, Junblat said that he believes that "every opposition is targeted." He accused the Syrian intelligence of continue to have presence in Lebanon and of affecting the elections.

Junblat openly accused the former commander of the Syrian intelligence in Lebanon Lt. Roustoum Ghazalle of blocking an alliance between parliamentarian Eli Skaff and al-Hariri list. Junblat added that one Syrian intelligence officer, at least, called "Abu Michael" is still in Chtoura town in the Bekaa near the Syrian borders, in addition to another officer in the southern district of Beirut.

The successive accusations against Syria came at a time in which Lebanon enters next Sunday the third phase of parliamentary negotiations in the Mount of Lebanon and the Bekaa.

The parliamentary rivalry in the four circles of the Mount of Lebanon seems very fierce between Walid Junblat and Michael Aoun who has been allied with figures supporting Syria, especially with parliamentarian Michael al-Murr.
