Abuja talks between Khartoum, Darfur rebels resumed
Sudan, Politics, 6/11/2005
The Sudanese government on Friday resumed talks with the rebels of Darfur in the Nigerian capital Abuja with the aim of reaching a peaceful solution for the crisis in west Sudan.
Chairman of the Union's commission Alfa Omar Kounari opened the inauguration session of the negotiation between the delegation of the Khartoum government and the two main rebel movements, al-Adel Wal Musawat (the justice and equality) and the Sudan's liberation army.
This session, however, is considered the fourth of the negotiations between the two sides of the conflicts in Abuja under the auspices of the African Union. The talks were frozen since almost 6 months after the Sudan's liberation army accused the Sudanese government forces of attacking its lands.
The African Union hopes to invest the improvement in the conditions of the district in order to finalize an agreement during this round before July 9th when the new Sudanese constitution will be approved, according to the peace agreement with the rebels of the south.
The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir had expressed his hope that this recent round will be the last, stressing that its delegation is fully authorized to finalize an agreement.
On the other hand, the rebels of Darfur called on the Sudanese government to give concession to reach a solution for the crisis. The chairman of the al-Adel Wal Musawat movement, Khalil Ibrahim Muhammad, said that the movement seeks a peaceful solution that preserves the unity of Sudan's lands and achieves just and comprehensive peace.
