Hawwas said that the first such portrait replacing mummy masks and busts date back to the first century A.C. Pharaohs used them to help their souls recognize their bodies in the after-life.
Hawwas added that although these portraits could be found in many places, they are known as the Fayyoum portraits, since it was there that they there first discovered.
Director of the Museum, Wafaa Al-Seddiq said that the exhibition is displaying a wealth of monuments.
Visitors will become acquainted with the various forms of garments, jewels and even hair styling of the time.
The exhibition has an educational role. It highlights the features of the Greco-Roman period of the Egyptian civilization. A book will be distributed for use by the blind.
