Baath party reform recommendations wide ranging

The spokeswoman for the 10th Baath party regional congress in Syria, Butheina Shaaban, said that the Baath party central committee now has 96 members, including 18 women, while it was 90 members before.

She explained that the congress decided that member of the Baath party leadership will continue only for two sessions ( 10 years in all), because the regional congress convenes every five years for one time and a special session is held every two years.

She indicated that the congress decided to separate the party from the authority, which means that no member in the regional leadership has right to assume another post in the government with the exception of the Parliament speaker and the prime minister and members of the executive and legislative authorities.

The spokeswoman stressed that the Baath party assistant secretary general gave his resignation from all his posts after he was removed from the regional leadership.

She also stressed that the congress took strategic recommendations covering all walks of life including ending corruption and adoption of a social market economy.

Shaaban talked about a new vision for the political practices in Syria. She said that the congress recommended revision of the Emergency Law in Syria and limiting its scope to crimes which target state security, and the issuance of a law for political parties under the condition they will be not be based on "sectarian, ethnic, religious, regional basis."

She indicated that the recommendations for reform approved by the congress has no links to foreign pressures, rather spring from the needs of the Syrian citizens and the inclination of the Baath party.
