Moroccan press lashes out at Islamist anti-monarchy statements
Morocco, Politics, 6/9/2005

The Moroccan press lashed out at Nadia Yassine's latest declaration stating that the monarchy does not suit Morocco.

Yassine, the daughter of the spiritual leader of the Islamist, non-recognized movement "Al Adl Wal Ihsane" (Justice and Charity), Abdessalam Yassine, vented, in a interview with the Moroccan weekly Al Ousbouia Al Jadida, her preference for the republican regime, adding that the monarchy does not suit Morocco.

Following her statements, Yassine was summoned Friday, June 3 by the judiciary police at the request of the Prosecutor of the Rabat first instance court.

Attajdid daily of the moderate Islamic party, Justice and Development (represented in parliament), said in its latest issue that Yassine's statements "don't even deserve to be spoken about," stressing that the monarchic system has been chosen by Moroccans for centuries.

The Al-Alam daily, mouthpiece of Al Istiqlal (independence) Party (in government), deplored that Nadia Yassine's declarations evidence her ignorance of the essence of the monarchy.

The daily says that Nadia Yassine should remember that history has proven that "the monarchy is not a classical system," but rather "a system in constant development consolidating democracy."

For L'Opinion daily, (Istiqlal party), these declarations show "the absence of a clear and coherent vision" of Nadia Yassine.

It particularly evidences her "flagrant rejection of the popular will," said the daily.
