Nouakchott demonstrates against the north attacks
Mauritania, Politics, 6/9/2005
Thousands of Mauritanian people took the streets on Wednesday in a people's march organized by the ruling social democratic party in protest of the attack which targeted a military position to the north east of the country in which 15 soldiers were killed and other 17 were injured.
The demonstrators raised emblems deploring this act which they described as criminal. In the demonstration, the ruling party called on the Mauritanian people to rally around President Mu'aweya Seidi Ahmad al-Taye who has been ruling the country since more than 20 years.
Nouakchott held this incident responsible for "al-Salafeyah group for call and fighting" which by its turn claimed in a statement on the Internet responsibility for Monday's attack on a military group in al-Maghiti area to the east of al-Zweirat city in north Mauritania.
Opponent sides said that Mauritania exlpoits the war led by the USA against terrorism to oppress its Islamists opposers.
The authorities detained in the few recent months some 50 suspects among Islamists, saying that they have links to al-Salafeyah group and the security forces inspected mosques and confiscated religious books.
