Paintings on Algerian resister by French artist presented in Fez museum
Morocco-Algeria, Culture, 6/8/2005
Paintings inspired from the spiritual writings and poems of humanist intellectual and symbol of the Algerian resistance to colonial power, Emir Abdelkader, are exhibited in the Batha museum of the Central city of Fez.
The paintings by French Jacques Paris are presented in the framework of the city World Sacred Music festival that opened on June 3.
Paris drew the paintings inspired from books and metaphysical poems of Emir Abdelkader (Mascara 1808-Damascus 1893) and tried through the large formats of the paintings to render Abdelkader's biographers who describe him as "so great that he forces the admiration of his rivals."
The poems Paris drew inspiration from were translated from Arabic by Charles Andre Gillis and published in 1983.
The 11th edition of the World Sacred Music (June 3-11) kicked off Friday in Fez under the theme "Paths of Hope" with a concert that brought together Moroccan and Spanish artists.
This international music event, held in Morocco's cultural capital, is marked this year by the presence of musicians from over 15 countries. Since the festival started in October 1994, it has become a call for peace and for harmonization between spiritual cultures.
