After Hizbullah great elections win, Washington calls for dismantling Hizbullah weapons, considers it terrorist organization
Lebanon-USA, Politics, 6/7/2005
In the first reaction of the Lebanese Hizbullah party winning the second round of the parliamentary elections in south Lebanon, Washington said that this party will continue to be viewed by it as "a terrorist organization" while the party stressed it will not give up its arms.
The spokesman for the White House Scott McClellan stressed in a press conference the need to dismantle Hizbullah weapons according to UN Security Council resolution 1559. He considered that the assassination of the Lebanese journalist Samir Qassir "underscores the environment that has been created by Syria's long presence in that country. And that's something that needs to be -- his assassination is something that needs to be fully investigated."
The American position coincided with the Israeli one in calling for dismantling the weapons of this party, and accused it of being a heavily armed terrorist organization. The spokesman for the foreign ministry Mark Rejeve considered that solving what he called, the Lebanese problems, starts with the full implementation of UN resolution 1559.
For his part, the foreign relations official in the Hizbullah party, Ali Damoush, said that it will not drop its arms, according to UN resolution even if Israel withdraws from Shebaa farms and south Lebanon.
In a press conference held in Paris Damoush stressed his party's defense strategy, noting the need of defending Lebanon under the continued Israeli threats and continued Israeli air violations of the Lebanese airspaces.
