More US citizens ask for the Quran due to the desecration incidents
Regional-USA, Politics, 6/6/2005
Mufti of the Egyptian Republic Ali Gomaa demanded the US administration to apologize to all Muslims for the five incidents of profaning the Holy Quran by the US soldiers according to the Pentagon report.
Moreover, Gomaa said that the apology should be supported by guarantees preventing the repetition of such the provocative incidents.
Meanwhile, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) Thursday said some 5,000 people have requested for provision of the free copies of the Holy Quran since the launch of the group's (Explore the Quran) campaign on May 17.
CAIR's campaign is designed as a positive response to the recent controversy over desecration of the Quran. Those who have requested free Qurans include a police officer who works with the Muslim community, Christian religious leaders who wish to explain Islam to their congregations and Americans of all faiths who just wish to learn more about Islam's revealed text. (Calls are coming into CAIR's Washington, D.C., headquarters at the rate of one-per-minute.)
ÒThe overwhelmingly positive response to our 'Explore the Quran' campaign reflects a desire by ordinary Americans to better understand Islam and Muslims,Ó said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. He encouraged Muslims to support the campaign by sponsoring a Quran.
CAIR says it is America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 31 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
