Egyptian parliament refuses to investigate attacks on journalists
Egypt, Politics, 6/6/2005

The Egyptian parliament on Saturday refused a request for the opposition to investigate attacks launched by supporters of the ruling party against demonstrators and journalists, during a referendum held in May.

Some 100 members of the parliament, which is dominated by the ruling national party, expressed their rejection to the request made by the leader of al-Ghad opposition party, parliamentarian Ayman Nour in this regard.

Worthy mentioning that supporters of the party which is led by President Hosni Mubarak attacked activists who called for the boycotting of a referendum on a new law for presidential elections held on May 25th. Mubarak's supporters also kicked journalists covering the acts of protest and tried to abuse women and female journalists who took part in the protests.

The rejection made by the parliamentarians came after the attorney general Maher Abdul Wahed started investigations in the attacks committed during the demonstration which was organized by the Egyptian opposition movement for the change Kefayah (enough) against nominating President for a fifth term of office.
