Lebanese opposition and journalist demonstration in support of Qassir
Lebanon, Politics, 6/4/2005

Hundreds of journalists and opposition supporters gathered in al-Shuhadaa (martyrs) square in Beirut to deplore the assassination of Lebanese journalist Samir Qassir, and observed a one minute silence in memory of his soul.

The observers of the sit in raised pictures for the killed journalist and pencils to confirm the freedom of the press and the media.

In response to the call made by the opposition to carry out a general strike mourning the assassinated journalist, some schools and trade centers were closed especially in al-Ashrafeyah area of a Christian majority, while activities continued in banks.

The follow up committee for the so-called Bristol meeting held a meeting to approve a protest work program, including mainly a gathering at Baabda palace on Monday demanding the resignation of the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud.

The gathering will be followed by a press conference on Tuesday to announce the next steps under the title "in defense of March 14, the demonstration of the historical opposition in rejection of the Syrian control, in challenge of the Syrian security regime and its new allies."
