US senators back political and peaceful solution to Moroccan Sahara issue
Morocco-USA, Politics, 6/3/2005

Visiting US senators voiced, in Rabat Thursday, support to a political and peaceful solution to the Moroccan Sahara conflict.

At the end of a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister, Mohamed Benaissa, Oregon Senator Gordon Smith said a peaceful and political solution to this conflict is the only way to establish peace for the peoples of the region, calling on all concerned parties to "watch what they say" in order to create an atmosphere favorable to this solution.

In a separate meeting with the American delegation on the same day, Moroccan Premier, Driss Jettou, hailed the support of the delegation to the Moroccan territorial integrity.

A satisfaction that was echoed by Moroccan FM, who said the US senators understand the importance for Morocco to achieve its territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territories.

Jettou said the American Senators hailed the Moroccan experience in micro-credit the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) contributes to.

He said the American government is convinced of the success of this experience, to which was dedicated MAD 100 million to facilitate access to micro-credit for over 500,000 recipients.

The meetings of the US senators with Morocco's premier and earlier with the Moroccan FM addressed a number of issues of mutual interest such as security and the war on terror in the region and worldwide.

The American delegation lauded the reforms introduced by the Moroccan monarch to reinforce democracy and promote human rights and women rights.

The delegation, which has met, earlier in the day, with the minister of Industry, Trade and Economy Upgrading, Salaheddine Mezouar, ends Thursday a working visit that it has started to Morocco on May 31.
