Al-Aredim and Aoun- Arsalan alliance; Sfeir on developments
Lebanon, Politics, 6/2/2005
The newly elected Lebanese parliamentarian Ghazi al-Aaredi said in a statement to al-Jazeera TV commenting on the list that Aoun- Arsalan alliance is positive.
Aareidi, one of Junblat's aides, said that this alliance removes the opportunity of launching the election battle in the Mountan area on purely ethnic or sectarian ground.
In this regard, the Maronite Church on Wednesday repeated its complaint over the elections, and its criticism of the unrest in the circles of Christian politicians.
The Maronite Patriarch council which is presided over by patriarch Nasrullah Sfeir issued on Wednesday a statement said that the "situation of unrest in the lines, especially the Christian line, caused great loss to national principles." Worthy mentioning that the elections whose first phase was organized in Beirut and ended in the winning of the whole seats of al-Hariri list witnessed very weak turnout by Christians.
The statements of the Patriarchs renewed criticism for the law on the ground of which the elections were held, noting that the rivalry between candidates which is made on the ground of "interest and personal feuds " is very damaging to national interests.
