A joint list for Aoun, Arsalan in confrontation of Junblat
Lebanon, Politics, 6/2/2005

The Lebanese elections on Wednesday entered a new phase with the announcement made by the opposition figure Michael Aoun a joint list with Faisal Arsalan who competes with parliamentarian Walid Junblat traditionally, over the leadership of the Druze.

Arsalan, a parliamentarian and a former ally to Damascus, announced the names of members of the joint list in a press conference held in Beirut. The list which is called "the list of the change and reform" includes candidates for the two sides and allies of less weight in Ba'bda- Aley circle.

Worthy mentioning that Aoun had earlier negotiations with Junblat and his ally in Beirut Saad Eddine al-Hariri through representatives for the two said leaders to make an understanding over the candidates in the said circle and in other circles in the Bekaa and the north. However, the negotiations came to failure.

Aoun and Arsalan will face the strongest challenge since the beginning of the elections on May 28 against the alliance of Junlbat and the Lebanese forces led by Samir Jaajaa and an implicit understanding with the Hizbullah party which is in this election over one of the two Shiite seats in Baabda circle.

Arsalan presides over the list which includes candidates for Aoun trend in Baabda - Aley, while Aoun himself will compete in another circle in the Mountain where the voting operation in its four circles will be on June 12 in line with the circles of the Bekaa.
