Sudanese government refuses special currency for southern Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 6/1/2005
The Sudanese government notified the International Monetary Fund its rejection to the issuance of a special "paper currency" for the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)circulated in several southern Sudan cities.
Officials at the Sudanese ministry of finance said that the decision of the movement to issue a special currency for it is considered a violation for the peace agreement and called on the movement to stop distribution of the new currency.
Those officials called on the movement to keep the currency it had collected from citizens.
The Sudanese government had agreed with the movement in February this year to use the "Genea" ( pound) as an official currency to replace the Dinar currently in use in the country.
The movement opposes the use of the Dinar because of its symbols of the Islamic civilization.
Worthy mentioning that the Sudanese "Genea" was the currency used in the country until the current government abrogated it and replaced it by Dinar. One Dinar is equal to ten Genea.
