Hamas rejects re-elections, call on Palestinians to boycott
Palestine, Politics, 6/1/2005
The Islamic resistance movement( Hamas) refused taking part in the re-elections in three municipalities in Gaza after the results in certain circles were dismissed in which the movement won by the beginning of May.
Hamas held the Fatah movement, which dominates the joints of the political decision and the government, the responsibility for such a disorder.
The spokesman for Hamas, Sami Abu Zahri, said in a press conference in Gaza that the movement will not surrender to confiscating its victory nor the will of our Palestinian people.
Abu Zahri called on the Palestinian people to boycott the Palestinian elections, noting that Hamas will not recognize its results nor its consequences.
He said that Hamas called for assurances for repeating the elections. Among these assurances is postponing this voting so as to prepare for holding it in an atmosphere of "transparency."
Both Hamas and Fatah agreed last Thursday during the first direct meeting between them under Egyptian patronage to end tension which followed the decisions of the court on repeating the elections.
The central committee of the Palestinian local elections announced it was due to distribute ballot centers on Tuesday evening and that the elections to be made today in Rafah, al-Breij and Beit Lahia.
In another development, the chairman of the Palestinian presidency court Rafiq al-Husseini said that President Mahmoud Abbas will discuss debated amendments to the elections law, in a step which will postpone the due legislative elections.
