Mrs Mubarak hails key role on working women
Egypt, Politics, 5/31/2005

Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak, head of the National Council for Women, said yesterday people nowadays are having in-depth and comprehensive vision on women's work, not only in Egypt but worldwide.

Marking the Day of Working Women, Mrs. Mubarak said women's work is no longer considered as a means to attain economic independence or gain money, but it has rather become an entrenched right so that women can translate their aspirations into concrete steps.

She said she is proud of working Egyptian women "who left their indelible marks on the economic landscape."

ΚΚΚ Mrs. Mubarak said Egyptian working women have been always an example of constructive participation in their society as they shoulder backbreaking responsibilities, like family life, along with their work.

She said executive and official work domains are no longer exclusive for men, as women have proved that they can be trustworthy.

"Women have further made impressive strides in the voluntary work and regained rights through a number of new laws," she said. She said women's participation in the labour market helps boost the country's economy.

But Mrs. Mubarak said that women are vulnerable to economic changes, partly because of the policy of liberalization and the unequal distribution of globalization benefits among the developed and developing countries. Mrs. Mubarak said that women should exercise their political rights in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in Egypt. She said women have to demonstrate a positive political sense and enter the political spectrum with self-confidence and firm steps.

"Egyptian women have made history when they took part in the unions activities in 1940s, even before getting all their political rights," she said. She said that Egyptian women should try their best to preserve their legacy.

"Egyptian women have indeed set themselves up as a paradigm over the years for striking the right balance between their family duty and other works," she added.
