Major security operation in Baghdad
Iraq, Military, 5/30/2005
An official source at the Iraqi ministry of defense said that a major security operation of 40,000 Iraqi policemen and soldiers started in Baghdad and its surrounding in the course of chasing gunmen.
The source explained that the Iraqi army installed fixed inspection points around Baghdad and mobile inspection points and started acts of arrest inside the city.
On the other hand, the spokesman for the Iraqi government Leith Kebba said that the inspection operations and campaigns resulted in detaining 500 persons and finding weapons hidden in several houses, noting that this measure has tightened the movement of what he called the terrorist networking in Baghdad and other areas.
In a press conference in Baghdad, Kebba expected reactions to take place to the security operation, but noted this will not affect its general track. He explained that there is a decrease in the operations and that the operations moved to the north west of Iraq.
Replying to a question on rumors concerning the death of the leader of al-Jihad al-Qaida organization in Iraq, the Jordanian Abi Musab al-Zarqawi and that his family is preparing a eulogy for him in al-Zarqa town in Jordan, he stressed he does not rule out al-Zarqawi's fate to have been killed or expelled from the country.
In the same context, Iran denied, by the spokesman for its foreign ministry Hameed Rida Asefi that al-Zarqawi has had moved to it or had received treatment in it, as stated by the British daily "Sunday Times." He said that these news are groundless.
