Sahrawis meet Moroccan premier and media to advance national cause
Morocco, Politics, 5/28/2005

A delegation of Moroccan Southern provinces representatives held talks here Friday with premier Driss jettou, who voiced regrets at the latest Algerian statements on the Sahara issue stressing Morocco will defend its national cause in international forums.

The Moroccan RTM TV quoted Jettou saying: "we are confident in the legitimacy of our rights" over the Sahara and "we carry on our global development process in this part of the Kingdom."

The Southern provinces representatives denounced the Algerian stance on the Sahara issue and lauded the development initiatives carried out in the Moroccan Sahara during the past decades. Algeria has been backing the so-called "Polisario" since 1975 when Morocco retrieved its Southern provinces from Spanish rule under the Madrid accords opposed by the separatist movement that claims to separate the provinces from Morocco.

Jettou also announced to the Sahrawi delegation several officials from the housing and interior departments will be visiting Laayoune to renew the meetings with the inhabitants of the Sahara.

In Casablanca the delegation met several journalists and toured media offices to talk with them of the role the media can play in defending the Sahara issue, TVM said.

The meetings with the media are also meant to provide journalists with information likely to help the press disseminate to the national and international public opinion the evolution of the Sahara issue and the Moroccan territorial integrity.
