Mauritania, Politics, 5/28/2005

The Mauritania's state security has brought scores of Islamists activists to the attorney which will officially accuse them of being members in an organization it described as terrorist.

The attorney is expected to address accusations officially to the detained Islamists until they are brought to judiciary. This group was arrested within the detention campaign launched by the security authorities since April 25th.

Meantime, the Mauritanian authorities released 14 detainees, while health conditions of other detainees were deteriorated.

News reports said that the security forces released the detainees from the police school while they are veiled so as they will not be recognized. They were expected to be brought to the attorney after period set for their custody expired.

Earlier leaked news reports talked about the deteriorated health conditions of several detainees including Sheikh Muhammad al-Hassan Weld al-Dodou and the former ambassador al-Mukhtar Weld Muhammad Mousa and lawyer Muhammad Ahmad Weld al-Haj Seidi..

On the other hand, Mauritania media sources said that the two Mauritanian opposition members Abdullah Weld Nafe and Issa Bin Muhammad Weld Jabous were kidnapped on Thursday from Gambia and they arrived in Nouakchott tightened and were handed over to the state security. Weld Nafe was detained in Gambia in 2004 after he was accused by the former Consul in Gambia of having ties with al-Qaida organization. But he was not detained for long.
