Bulgarian president in Libya to discuss fate of AIDS nurses case
Libya-Bulgaria, Politics, 5/28/2005

Bulgarian president Georgy Barvanov arrived in Libyan capital Tripoli in order to hold talks with the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi dealing with the fate of five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death after they were convicted of deliberately injecting more than 400 children with HIV virus which causes AIDS.

The visit of the Bulgarian President comes four days before the supreme court in Libya issued its sentence on the appeal filed by the five nurses.

Prior to the arrival of the Bulgarian president, the Libyan minister of justice commended on the case of the accused nurses of transferring HIV among the Libyan children as "a humanitarian case that should be dealt with within an international framework, rather between two countries." Hundreds of demonstrators of the families and relatives of the children who died by AIDS gathered in front of the airport upon the arrival of the Hungarian president and carried coffins and black banners as well as photos for the killed children and emblems demanding honoring the judiciary decision.

Libya seeks to improve its relations with the Europeans especially after its decision in 2003 to dismantle its nuclear program and its consent to compensate the victims of Lockerbie plane. Libya had also expressed desire to join the EU- Mediterranean Association Agreement.
