Amnesty highlights need to sue 'Polisario' perpetrators of rights violations
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 5/27/2005
Spokeswoman of Amnesty International for MENA, Nicole Choueiry, said it is necessary to bring "Polisario" officials, authors of human rights violations, before justice.
Amnesty International deplores the living conditions of the populations sequestered in Tindouf camps, affirmed Choueiry in a statement aired on the Moroccan channel '2M' on Wednesday.
The spokesperson recalled that AI has called several times for the release of Moroccan citizens held by the Polisario separatists in the camps.
The Algeria-backed Polisario Front lays claim to Morocco's southern provinces, known as the Sahara. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid accords signed with Spain and Mauritania.
'2M' also reported statements of Sydati Daffa and Rabkas Nabd who were able to return to their homeland Morocco after six years of suffering in Tindouf camps.
They said they have witnessed in the prison where they were held assassinations and other forms of torture and humiliation perpetrated by the Polisario against many sequestered persons.
On Wednesday, AI urged for the immediate release of the Moroccans detained by the "Polisario" Front in Tindouf camps.
Director of AI's Middle-East and North Africa program, Abdel Salam Sidahmed, said Amnesty has highlighted in different reports that the incarceration of these detainees is a blatant violation of human rights.
