Government reform efforts failed, opposition party
Morocco, Politics, 5/27/2005

The government failed to work out economic reforms able to encourage companies and investments, deplored Thursday, the leader of the Justice and Development Party (PJD- moderate Islamic party) in the House of Representatives.

Speaking at a plenary session to discuss the recent government statement on its overall actions, Abdellah Baha said the government action does not rest on a national economic and social development plan, or an integrated development vision, which can only result in scattering efforts, wasting means and losing opportunities.

The Islamist party representative criticized the government as being "incapable of concretizing the expectations of citizens and satisfying the needs of poor regions and impoverished populations." He deplored that this deficit is "a natural result of a structural crisis" marked by the large number of ministerial portfolios and the lack of cohesion within the government.

Baha went on to say that the policy of upgrading the national economy has come to an impasse, and that it is marked by the "wait-and-see" policy. He criticized the large number of economy funding mechanisms and the complexity of procedures to benefit from them.

At the political level, Baha said Morocco should seize the chance to upgrade the political field, including political parties, in accordance with the royal speech addressed at the opening of the legislative year.
