Parliamentary groups unanimously condemn Algerian stance
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 5/27/2005

The parliamentary groups at the House of Representatives vented, in Rabat Thursday, their unanimous condemnation of the recent hostile statements of Algerian officials that aim at foiling Morocco's efforts to achieve its territorial integrity, and that impede the building the Maghreb Arab Union (UMA).

While persisting in its attempts to thwart Morocco's effort to achieve its territorial integrity, Algeria harms its own interests too, said the leader of the Istiqlal and egalitarianism group, Abdelhamid Aouad, explaining that the paralysis of the UMA hampers the realization of Maghreban generations' expectations, who long for a strong regional grouping capable of negotiating with other economic and political groupings.

Driss Lachguer, of the socialist group deplored that Algeria's support to the separatists, who threaten to return to armed confrontations - these confrontations stopped following a UN-brokered cease-fire concluded in 1991 with Morocco, is utterly against the logic adopted by the international community.

This choice will thrust the region into the peril of confrontation, contrary to the initiative of Morocco, which seek the unity of Maghreban countries, he said.

The leader of the Justice and Development Party called for Morocco to "take national initiatives able to bar such aggressive politics."

As to the leader of the socialist alliance, Mohamed Ahjam, he voiced regret that after a revival of a rapprochement possibility between the two neighboring countries, and the hopes pinned on the UMA summit, the Algerian authorities just "ruined once again this dream." He called for vigilance and the preservation of national unity that constitute "the source of our strength."
