Electricity ministry completes electric grid project with Iraq

In cooperation with German SEIMENS Company, Syria's Ministry of Electricity has begun the installation of three power plants in Syria as a part of the electric grid project with Iraq.
Director of the Quintet-Electric Grid Project, Majed al-Omerin said to al-Thawra daily on Thursday " the grid project with Iraq is being carried out inside the Syrian lands through execution three powers plants in Naseriya, Teem and Palmyra." The costs of the project is Euros 25 millions, and Syrian pounds 229 million, he added.
It is expected that the plants will be put in service at the end of 2006, he stressed.
The project requires installation of a 500 km line in the central area from the electric Generating Station of Gender to Der Ezzor, then from Der Ezzor at the eastern area to the Iraqi borders, in addition to two electric generating stations along the line, he continued.
The project is considered the last part of the septet grid project that costs about USD 100 million and is expected to be completed in 2007.
In the forthcoming few months the project will be carried out with Lebanon on 400 K Volt, while the electricity grid with Egypt and Jordan were completed power 2001, and the project will be completed with Turkey during the next period.
The septet grid project aimed at decreasing the costs of establishing new generation plants and for saving the primary reservoir and the cost invested in the field of building international planning to meet the increasing demands on energy.
The Arab gird contributes to sign buying and selling agreements and unifying long-term systems and tensions.
The total cost of the project in the Syrian territories estimated at USD 300 million.
