Greek president notes hipocracy of countries not forcing Israel to abide by UN resolutions

Greece President Karlos Papoulias received Thursday afternoon a message form President Bashar al-Assad on the "updated developments in the Middle East and bilateral relations between the two countries." Foreign Minister Farouq al-Sharaa handed the message to the Greek president when received him at the presidential palace in Athens today.

Papoulias voiced appreciation of Syria's policy under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad underlining, " Syria's important role to accomplish peace and stability in the region," and noting at the same there would be "no solution for the region problems without Syria." The Greek president highly appreciated what Syria has done in Lebanon saying this was an "expression of respect to the international legitimacy." He noted that despite of UN Security Council resolutions presence, the Golan is still occupied, the matter that "proves double standards and not dealing with some international issue in a fair way." He asked to convey his sincerest greetings to President Bashar al-Assad voicing happiness to meet the President call to visit Syria.

Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa described his talks with his Greek counterpart as constructive and friendly.

"Our viewpoints agreed that security and stability in the region can be realized only by respecting the international resolutions, implementing its resolutions and ending the occupation," al-Shara said during joint statements with his Greek counterpart.

The minister said that Arab peace initiative approved in Beirut 2002 constitutes an appropriate framework to reach a just settlement for every side.

For his part, Greek Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis expressed his countries keenness to continue its role regarding the Arab issues through its membership in the European Union, underlining Syria's important role to realize stability in the region.

"Greece concerns of increasing investments in Syria as well as exchanging businessmen visits with it to realize a considerable trade exchange between the two countries," Moliviatis added.
