Yemeni sales tax proposal controversy
Yemen, Politics, 5/27/2005
The higher constitutional committee in Yemen accepted a judicial case against the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his prime minister Abdul Qader Bajmal as well as the speaker of the parliament Sheikh Abdullah al-Ahmar.
The case was filed by the chamber of trade and commerce in Sanaa. An Internet site of the Yemeni opposition Coalition Party for reforms said that the filed case describes as illegal the constitutionality of the sales tax law the Yemeni government intends to take as from July.
The site quoted Hassan Mahli, the lawyer of the chamber of commerce and industry in Sanaa as saying that "he handed over the constitutional department at the higher court a copy of the file against the constitutionality of the law after the case was accepted and fees to this end was paid estimated at 100,000 Yemeni riyals ( USD 550 )." However, the court has not defined a date yet for the first session.
Worthy mentioning that the law to impose sales tax at 5% which the government intends to carry out as from the mid of the current year is the same law which has been postponed for several times since 2002 because of differences between the traders and the government.
